Day 1 ripped my soul out. I felt like I was an hour too late. Knowing TWO trucks were pulling in literally within moments of me arriving made me sick. I dont even know how to describe the feeling. It’s an internal panic of no, no, no, they didn’t even get a chance.
I immediately did the best that I could KNOWING we already had right around $11,000 raised. I asked if they would all fit and if they didn’t if the tag numbers I had quickly wrote down could be loaded last in the off chance the trailers were too full that were being loaded to ship to Mexico.
Five tags stood standing by the time the second semi truck pulled out. FIVE. THANK GOD I was even able to keep those five from shipping. I used the money we had already raised to go towards an older white mare we named Dorothy, a dun gelding whose foot was literally falling off who needs to be put down, its horrifying, a super old skinny black mare we named Rose whose around 25 years old, and a little extra to go towards an older SO SWEET gelding named Al.
One of our focus horses today, who will be our 6th save so far, will be the thorougbred who still had the medical wrap on her leg, who we have named Sofia. SHE IS SO SWEET! I will be starting her fundraiser here and also on the social media platforms. She moves sound on the leg which to me suggests the owners didnt want to deal with the leg anymore so threw her away, literally. It makes me so mad! I wish people would wake up and make this type of absolute crap illegal.
Her injury reminds me so much of Walter, a horse we rescued from the direct ship pen who we still have who is thriving. These wounds take a long time to heal but THEY HEAL. I already took the wrap off to see what was going on underneith it, felt around, and it appears to be all soft tissue damage. Our team feels fully confident we can get Sofia healed up and back on track and get this, she is only 2.5/3 years old! She is a baby!
She would have been shipped yesterday had she not been part of the lucky 5 who didnt fit and we can now have a chance to fundraise for before they ship again later today.
We spent around around $5000 on Walters medical treatments at Outlaw Vet Hospital as far as doctoring and time goes and I expect Sofia to be right around the same amount plus her purchase price. So we will need to raise around $6500 for Sofia. I will also make Sofia a part of our Patreon platform so that you can follow her progress and journey! If you arent on Patreon she is another reason to sign up for $1 a month!
Additionally, we have to work hard today to get these fundraiser done as the horses are still scheduled to ship.
Two more horses we are going to work on saving are a belgian with a broken calcified leg and a belgian ex brood mare older girl who is SO SWEET. The belgian with the broken leg, Evander which means a good man, needs to be given the last act of kindness. He also deserved a name so I thought Evan was fitting Not on a semi truck with a crooked leg hobbling in pain for 17 hours down to a slaughter plant in Mexico. Its not right and for me, it is a no brainer to do the right thing.
The belgian ex brood mare we have named Elaina. I will have her fundraiser video up today also to work on getting her safe. She doesnt look like she has any issues at all and is literally the kindest soul. I will be horrified if what appears to be a swollen belly from having babies her whole life turns out to be that she is pregnant. We will make sure once we get her safe that she is checked by the vet so we know for sure what we are dealing with, which is hopefully just retirement and a happy life.
I will have a ton more updates etc on the Instagram and Facebook stories today. I need your help. I need all the help I can get to really make a massive impact in their lives, and so many others this weekend. Its crazy to think that we are literally their saving grace. You. Me. All of us. We will do it I know it. I believe in you all so much and I know we all want to see justice done on their behalf. WE'VE GOT THIS!
