We rescued Hugo in March 2025 after I spotted him standing in a direct-ship pen the Monday before we were preparing to leave.

My heart immediately broke for him.

Hugo was stunning. It is incredibly rare to see a paint draft cross in a pen like that because these horses are often highly sought after for their size, beauty, and versatility. Seeing him there immediately raised red flags. I could not stop wondering what was wrong with him—or why anyone had decided he was no longer worth keeping.

We brought Hugo home to our California facility and began his rehabilitation. He received the nutrition, veterinary care, dental work, farrier care, and time he needed to regain his weight and strength. It was not until he reached a healthy weight that we began to understand why he had been discarded.

Hugo’s body is not built correctly conformationally. The way his shoulders and legs are positioned causes him to injure himself when he lies down. He requires special protective equipment, including hoof donuts and hock boots, along with consistent monitoring and ongoing care to keep him comfortable.

For the people who had him before us, maintaining those needs was likely more effort than simply replacing him with another horse.

So Hugo was thrown away.

To us, Hugo is not disposable. He is a beautiful and deeply loved member of All Seated in a Barn. His differences do not make him less deserving of comfort, safety, and a life surrounded by people who love him.
